Yangon, The Gulf Observer: Interest in Myanmar’s traditional overlapped-flap jacket and cheik htamein is experiencing a revival, as efforts to rediscover and remake these nearly forgotten garments gain traction. According to Black Magic Fashion & Design Castle, these traditional attires have largely faded from public use, prompting the initiative to recreate them based on old photographs.
“It’s a commoner’s dress that we are rediscovering,” said Ma Theingi Win (Mal Mal Phayar) from the shop in Mohnyin, Kachin State. “The royal dress is still worn by brides and grooms, so it hasn’t disappeared. However, the overlapping front-flap jacket and cheik htamein are rarely worn by commoners, making them obscure. That’s why we are reviving them from historical references.”
Due to the complexity and cost of individual tailoring, the project aims to mass-produce these garments at an affordable price. The initiative has garnered significant interest, with many people expressing enthusiasm for reviving Myanmar’s traditional fashion.
The primary goal of the initiative is to encourage young people to reconnect with Myanmar’s traditional attire and wear them at cultural events. “If one person starts wearing these costumes, their peers will become familiar with them. Once they recognize this as our heritage, it will be a meaningful achievement. Traditional costumes are ideal for cultural festivals, while individuals can dress as they please on other occasions,” she added.
The revival of these historic garments is expected to reignite cultural appreciation and encourage the younger generation to embrace Myanmar’s rich sartorial heritage.
