Romania Activates rescEU Mechanism to Repatriate Citizens from Middle East

Bucharest, The Gul Observer: Romania has activated the European Union’s rescEU Civil Protection Mechanism to repatriate its citizens stranded in the Middle East amid the ongoing regional security crisis, with hundreds already safely returned to the country.
According to Romanian authorities, two repatriation flights from Muscat, Oman, to Bucharest transported 273 Romanian citizens affected by the escalating conflict in the region. The flights were operated by Poland’s LOT airline under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, with transportation costs fully covered by the European Union.
The repatriation effort forms part of broader European evacuation operations aimed at assisting citizens stranded due to disruptions to commercial flights across parts of the Middle East. Romanian officials said that approximately 1,500 Romanian nationals have already been brought back home through a combination of evacuation flights, assisted repatriation operations, and commercial airline services.
The rescEU mechanism allows the European Commission to provide transport and logistical support when national capacities are insufficient. In this case, the flights were coordinated through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), which oversees emergency assistance requests from member states.
European authorities noted that the mechanism can finance up to 100 percent of the costs for flights organised under rescEU when additional support is required to evacuate EU citizens from crisis zones.
Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has continued to monitor the situation closely and maintain consular assistance for citizens in the region. Officials also estimate that around 1,000 additional Romanian nationals left the Middle East on commercial flights operated by airlines from Dubai, Qatar and other regional hubs.
The repatriation operations come as several European countries activate emergency mechanisms to assist nationals affected by the escalating security situation across the Middle East, which has disrupted international air travel and stranded thousands of travelers.
