Romanian President Highlights Role of Culture on National Culture Day

Nicușor Dan

Bucharest, The Gulf Observer: Romanian President Nicușor Dan on Wednesday marked National Culture Day with a message underscoring the central role of culture in shaping national identity, while announcing new initiatives to support contemporary artists and young creators.

In his message, the President emphasized that culture has long served as a foundation of Romania’s national character and creative spirit. “National Culture Day reminds us that Romania’s identity has been shaped over time through creativity and a universal vocation. Culture has been and remains the space where society’s great ideas become lasting landmarks, connecting the past, present, and future of a nation,” Nicușor Dan said.

Referring to poet Mihai Eminescu, whose legacy is closely associated with National Culture Day, the head of state stressed the importance of continued support for culture despite economic and geopolitical challenges. He recalled Eminescu’s words that culture represents the “best and safest wealth of a people,” and called for sustained efforts to protect and promote Romania’s cultural assets.

The President highlighted the need for coherent public policies and private sector involvement to preserve architectural heritage, encourage contemporary artistic initiatives and support new forms of cultural expression. He also underlined the role of digitization in safeguarding cultural heritage and strengthening connections between tradition, innovation and younger generations.

Looking ahead, Nicușor Dan noted that 2026 will be dedicated to renowned sculptor Constantin Brâncuși, describing the initiative as an opportunity to draw inspiration from a figure who transformed Romanian cultural identity into a universal value.

He also announced a concrete measure to support contemporary culture and emerging artists, stating that beginning this year, the Presidential Administration will periodically open the Cotroceni Palace theater hall for free performances by independent theater groups and high school troupes.

“Contemporary Romanian culture needs not only support but also real spaces for expression. Opening the doors of the Cotroceni Palace theater is a natural gesture to encourage new generations of creators,” he said, adding that interested theater groups may submit requests to the Presidential Administration.

The President concluded his message with a call to support a vibrant, living culture and expressed appreciation for all those engaged in artistic creation. “We need a living culture, and I thank everyone who, regardless of their field, dedicates themselves to art, giving it meaning and continuity. Happy Romanian Culture Day,” he wrote in a post shared on social media.
