Rubio and Fidan Discuss Regional Security After Iranian Missile Neutralized Near Türkiye

Rubio

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation on Wednesday to discuss the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, including an Iranian ballistic missile that was directed toward Turkish airspace but was successfully intercepted.

According to Turkish diplomatic sources, the two top diplomats exchanged views on the regional security environment following escalating hostilities involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

Earlier, Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense said a ballistic munition fired from Iran and heading toward Turkish airspace was intercepted and neutralized by NATO air and missile defense units deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In a statement posted on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, the ministry said the projectile was detected after passing through Iraqi and Syrian airspace and was successfully engaged by air defense systems before it could pose a threat.

The US State Department also confirmed the phone call, noting that Rubio and Fidan discussed recent developments in Iran and across the broader Middle East.

During the conversation, Rubio emphasized that any attacks targeting Türkiye’s sovereign territory were “unacceptable” and reaffirmed Washington’s full support for its NATO ally.

Both sides also reiterated the continued strength of the bilateral relationship between Türkiye and the United States and their commitment to close coordination on regional security issues.

Tensions across the region have escalated sharply since Saturday when joint US-Israeli strikes reportedly killed several senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In response, Iran has launched a series of drone and missile attacks targeting US-linked military facilities and strategic sites in Gulf countries, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
