Rwanda and DR Congo Agree on Economic Integration Framework Following Washington Peace Accord

Washington, The Gulf Observer: Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) have agreed on an initial framework for regional economic integration, marking a significant step forward in implementing the peace agreement signed in Washington in June, according to a statement released by the U.S. State Department on Friday.
The framework, as reported by Reuters, outlines key areas of bilateral cooperation including energy, infrastructure, mineral supply chains, national parks, and public health. These focus areas are designed to foster mutual economic development while supporting long-term peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
The U.S. government welcomed the agreement, describing it as a milestone in regional diplomacy and a practical step toward reducing tensions and enhancing cross-border collaboration. The State Department highlighted that both countries had shown constructive engagement and commitment to peace since the accord’s signing.
Analysts say the framework could pave the way for deeper trade ties, improved resource governance, and sustainable development if effectively implemented. The peace deal and its economic component come amid longstanding tensions between the two countries, particularly regarding security and mineral-rich border areas.
Further technical discussions and diplomatic coordination are expected in the coming months as Rwanda and DR Congo work to operationalize the framework and monitor progress on the ground.
