Samarkand Set to Host International Forum on Environmental Challenges and Human Rights

Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: On June 13-14, the IV Samarkand Forum on Human Rights will convene to discuss “Environmental Challenges: The Future of Human Rights and Sustainable Solutions in a Changing World,” according to media reports. Organized by the National Human Rights Centre of Uzbekistan, the forum will feature three plenary meetings conducted both offline and online.

The primary aim of this year’s forum is to explore the impact of climate change on human rights through comprehensive information analysis. Participants will gain crucial insights into the intersection of environmental and human rights issues, exchange experiences, and learn about best practices from the international community.

The forum will focus on developing concrete recommendations and solutions to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on human rights. It will serve as a platform for experts from various fields to formulate effective strategies and approaches aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and safeguarding human rights in the context of a changing climate.

National organizers include the National Human Rights Centre of Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan, and the “Strategy of Development” Center. The forum is supported by several international partners, notably the UN team in Uzbekistan. Key partners also include the Office of the Permanent Coordinator of the United Nations in Uzbekistan, the Regional Office of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central Asia, the Office of the United Nations Development Program in Uzbekistan, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan, as well as the Friedrich Ebert and Konrad Adenauer foundations, which have representative offices in the country.

The forum is expected to host 200 experts, including national and international specialists in climate and human rights, government officials, representatives from civil society institutions, the media, research centers, the business community, and international organizations.

The IV Samarkand Forum on Human Rights promises to be a significant event for fostering international collaboration and developing actionable solutions to address the pressing challenges posed by climate change to human rights.
