Saudi Arabia Launches Comprehensive Initiatives to Combat Food Waste
Riyadh, The Gulf Observer: In a significant step towards addressing the pressing issue of food waste, Saudi Arabia has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at minimizing wastage and promoting sustainability in the kingdom.
The Grace Preservation Foundation, a leading organization dedicated to environmental conservation and sustainable development, unveiled its strategic programs during a ceremony coinciding with the recent International Day of Zero Waste celebrations in Riyadh.
The launch event was graced by the presence of Saudi Minister of Municipal, Rural Affairs, and Housing, Majed Al-Hogail, who also serves as the chairman of the foundation. Alongside senior officials and board members, Minister Al-Hogail emphasized the critical importance of raising awareness about the adverse effects of food wastage on the environment, economy, and society at large.
Highlighting the foundation’s commitment to fostering innovative solutions and enhancing cooperation among stakeholders, Minister Al-Hogail underscored the significance of collaborative efforts in advancing sustainability goals.
Abdullah Binsaeed, CEO of the Grace Preservation Foundation, emphasized the pivotal role of cooperation between individuals and both the public and private sectors in conserving food resources, aligning with Islamic principles advocating for waste reduction, moderation, food preservation, and equitable surplus distribution to those in need.
During the ceremony, a national charter aimed at reducing waste was introduced, alongside the unveiling of a quality mark designed to assist food service companies, including hotels, restaurants, and wedding halls, in minimizing food wastage.
Additionally, officials announced the launch of the Grace Preservation platform and app, offering a range of services to associations within the food service industry and the broader community. The platform aims to facilitate contributions to the foundation’s initiatives, thereby supporting and empowering sustainable growth in the food preservation sector.
Through these comprehensive programs, the foundation aims to extend support to food preservation associations while encouraging the private sector to adopt sustainable practices for waste reduction. Furthermore, collaboration with relevant government agencies will be prioritized to develop national strategies aimed at combating food waste, thereby fostering a culture of responsible consumption and environmental stewardship across Saudi Arabia.
