Saudi Arabia Unveils Ambitious Uranium Enrichment and Renewable Energy Plans
Dhahran, The Gulf Observer: Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, has announced plans to invest in uranium enrichment and sales as part of the Kingdom’s broader strategy to strengthen its energy sector. Speaking at the iktva Forum & Exhibition 2025, organized by Saudi Aramco in Dhahran, Prince Abdulaziz emphasized Saudi Arabia’s commitment to maximizing its mineral resources and advancing energy security.
“Saudi Arabia plans to invest in all minerals, including uranium. We will enrich it and sell it,” the minister stated, highlighting the potential of the Jabal Sayid mineralized belt in the Madinah region, which contains significant uranium deposits.
Prince Abdulaziz also underscored Saudi Arabia’s focus on modernizing its industrial base by localizing advanced technologies, particularly in the petrochemical sector, which he identified as a critical component of the Kingdom’s future economic growth.
The energy minister revealed that over 60 contracts have been signed to advance clean energy initiatives, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s goal of generating 130 gigawatts of renewable energy, with 20% allocated as backup energy. He emphasized the Kingdom’s proactive approach to meeting its energy demands while driving economic expansion, noting, “Without energy, there is no prosperous future, and we will not achieve this except through hard work.”
Saudi Arabia is also focusing on infrastructure development to support energy transformation and distribution, aiming to address key challenges in achieving sustainable energy goals.
Additionally, Prince Abdulaziz highlighted the Kingdom’s roadmap for cooperation with Egypt in electricity interconnection. The project is expected to connect the two countries to a unified grid by next summer, enabling increased private investments in renewable energy projects such as solar and wind energy.
Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, affirmed in July that this collaboration would unlock new opportunities for both nations in the energy sector, strengthening ties and advancing regional energy security.
These initiatives reflect Saudi Arabia’s ambitious vision to lead in global energy innovation while ensuring sustainable development and economic diversification under the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 framework.
