Saudi Arabia's Climate Envoy Participates in High-Level Ocean Action Event

San Jose, The Gulf Observer: Saudi Arabia’s climate envoy participated in the High Level Event on Ocean Action: Immersed in Change, the Saudi Press Agency reported early on Saturday. The Saudi Minister of State, Adel Al-Jubeir, led the Kingdom’s delegation at the event, which took place in Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose, on June 7 and 8.

The meeting aimed to highlight globally significant topics related to ocean conservation and to drive actionable measures addressing the pressing environmental crises affecting oceans. Key issues such as fishing resources, the fight against ghost fishing gear, and the blue economy were discussed by an international panel.

The event builds on the momentum from the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, which saw substantial financial pledges totaling billions of dollars and around 50 high-level commitments. Among these commitments was “an investment of at least $1 billion to support the creation, expansion, and management of marine protected areas and Indigenous and locally governed marine and coastal areas by 2030,” according to the UN.

The 2017 UN Ocean Conference also made significant strides, concluding with the adoption of a “Call for Action” and 1,300 voluntary commitments toward ocean conservation. This year’s event in Costa Rica continues the global effort to safeguard marine environments and promote sustainable practices.

Saudi Arabia’s participation underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its active role in international initiatives aimed at preserving ocean health and combating climate change.
