Sri Lanka Reviews Economic Impact of Middle East Conflict, Considers Fuel Subsidy Measures

Colombo, The Gulf Observer: A high-level discussion on the economic challenges arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and necessary response measures was held on March 19 at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
According to the President’s Media Division, the meeting focused extensively on the global energy crisis triggered by disruptions in energy supply networks due to the conflict, as well as emerging trends in the international fuel market in the coming months.
Officials deliberated on strategies to manage fuel prices in a way that ensures a continuous energy supply, minimizes the impact on Sri Lanka’s economy, and helps sustain the economic gains achieved in 2025 while preventing further economic contraction.
During the discussions, President Dissanayake directed relevant authorities to explore the feasibility of introducing targeted subsidy mechanisms to stabilize fuel prices and cushion the economic impact on the public.
The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to proactive economic management amid evolving global uncertainties, particularly in the energy sector.
