Successful Conclusion of the 28th Muscat International Book Fair

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: Under the distinguished patronage of Dr. Abdullah bin Nasser Al Harrasi, Minister of Information and Chairman of the Main Committee of Muscat International Book Fair, the 28th edition of the prestigious event concluded on Saturday at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre. The highly anticipated literary gathering showcased the cultural richness of 34 countries and celebrated the vibrant contributions of local, Arab, and international publishing houses.

In his address, Ahmed bin Saud Al Rawahi, Director of Muscat International Book Fair, lauded the diverse array of “knowledge treasures” presented at the fair, totaling 622,000 titles spanning various fields. Among these were over 19,000 Omani books, reflecting the depth and diversity of the country’s literary landscape.

A remarkable feature of this edition was the inclusion of 130 activities, with special emphasis on programs tailored for children. Al Rawahi highlighted the presence of cultural and artistic luminaries from both within and beyond the Sultanate of Oman, contributing to the intellectual vibrancy of the event.

The accompanying exhibition served as a platform for Omani writers, whose contributions significantly enriched the success of the fair’s programs and activities.

Looking ahead, Al Rawahi announced that the North Al Sharqiyah Governorate would be the guest of honor for the 29th edition of Muscat International Book Fair, scheduled to take place from April 25 to May 2, 2024.

Raya bint Amer Al Jabri, a member of the Committee of Society Initiatives, unveiled the national program for reading during the concluding ceremony. This program, designed as an annual competition for juniors, seeks to foster critical thinking and a love for reading. Executed by the Ministry of Education under the supervision of the Committee of Society Initiatives, the program aims to benefit over 15,000 students in its inaugural season. Winners will be honored at the Muscat International Book Fair.

The award ceremony recognized outstanding contributions, with Al Khalil Art Group of Sultan Qaboos University, Al Shahba Art Group of Nizwa University, and the Culture and Art Group of the University of Applied Sciences – Shinas receiving accolades.

Participation in the 28th edition reached unprecedented levels, with 847 publishing houses from 34 countries contributing to the event. A total of 35,989 books, including 269,000 Arab books and 200,000 foreign books released in 2023 and 2024, underscored the global significance of Muscat International Book Fair.

The Ministry of Information played a pivotal role in this literary extravaganza, showcasing its commitment to promoting knowledge and cultural exchange through a pavilion featuring four corners. The successful conclusion of the 28th Muscat International Book Fair marks a testament to Oman’s dedication to fostering a vibrant literary landscape and fostering a love for reading among its citizens.
