Sultan of Brunei Urges Caution with AI, Emphasizes Faith and Unity in Islamic New Year 1447 Hijrah Address

Bandar Seri Begawan, The Gulf Observer: His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, has called on religious leaders and da’ie (preachers) to continue guiding the nation in preserving the blessings bestowed by Allah the Almighty. The call came during His Majesty’s titah (royal address) delivered in conjunction with the Islamic New Year 1447 Hijrah.

In his address, the Sultan expressed concern over the unchecked use of artificial intelligence (AI), which, while widely embraced for its benefits, poses significant risks if misused. He warned that AI, if exploited by irresponsible individuals, could function like a “virus” that spreads misinformation, weakens faith, and distorts thinking. This, he said, could have severe consequences on religious understanding and societal unity.

His Majesty likened the development of AI technology to a form of “migration” deeply embedded in daily life. While this shift brings various advantages, he cautioned that modern tools like AI also blur the lines between truth and falsehood. Social media, in particular, has become a platform for slander and misinformation, which the Sultan emphasized must be guarded against to protect the nation’s religious values.

Reflecting on global uncertainties and crises, the monarch highlighted the importance of vigilance and spiritual resilience. He urged the nation to remain steadfast in its faith and to continue upholding Islam as the guiding principle in both personal and national affairs. “We obey what religion commands and refrain from what it prohibits,” His Majesty affirmed, attributing the country’s peace and prosperity to its strong religious foundation.

Quoting from Surah Al-A’raf, verse 96 of the Holy Qur’an, His Majesty reminded the people that blessings from the heavens and the earth are granted to those who believe and fear Allah. These blessings, he noted, come in many forms: national peace, prosperity, obedience to leadership (Ulil Amri), and social harmony.

To safeguard these blessings, His Majesty stressed the need to maintain a life of faith and piety, especially in the face of modern influences that challenge traditional values. He reiterated his call for religious scholars and speakers to lead efforts in strengthening religious awareness across all segments of society.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to mark the new Hijrah year in peace, His Majesty extended warm Islamic New Year greetings to all Bruneians. He prayed for the continued safety, prosperity, and divine blessings upon Brunei Darussalam, while encouraging the nation to enter the new year with hope, vigilance, and renewed spiritual commitment.

The royal family joined His Majesty in conveying best wishes to the nation and reaffirmed their prayers for enduring peace and stability in the country.
