Tajikistan Records 8.4 Percent Economic Growth in 2025

Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: Tajikistan’s economy expanded by 8.4 Percent in 2025, according to official data released by the country’s statistical authorities, marking one of the strongest growth performances in Central Asia last year.

President Emomali Rahmon announced the figure during his year-end address to parliament, stating that gross domestic product reached approximately 173 billion somoni, equivalent to about $18.8 billion. He said the growth was largely driven by strong performance in industry, construction, agriculture, and the services sector.

Data from the Statistical Agency under the President of Tajikistan showed that industrial output increased by more than 20% year-on-year. The rise was supported by growth in mining, metallurgy, cement production, and food processing industries. Construction activity also recorded significant expansion, reflecting continued state investment in transport networks, housing, and energy infrastructure.

Authorities highlighted the Rogun hydropower project as a central pillar of the country’s economic strategy. Once fully operational, the project is expected to ensure domestic electricity security and increase power exports, particularly to neighboring markets.

Remittances remained a key driver of economic activity in 2025. Transfers from Tajik migrant workers—most of whom are employed in Russia—increased during the year, supporting household consumption and helping cushion the economy against external pressures. According to the World Bank, remittances have accounted for a substantial share of Tajikistan’s GDP in recent years, reaching nearly 48%, which underscores the economy’s exposure to labor market conditions abroad.

Foreign trade turnover also rose during the year. Exports of electricity, metals, and agricultural products increased, while imports of machinery, fuel, and construction materials expanded alongside higher investment activity. Regional media reported that China, Russia, and neighboring Central Asian countries remained Tajikistan’s main trading partners in 2025.
