Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: Tajikistan will hold elections for the lower chamber of Parliament and local councils on March 2, 2025, as per a decree issued by President Emomali Rahmon. Elections for the upper chamber of Parliament are set to follow on March 28, 2025.

The last parliamentary elections took place in March 2020. The lower chamber of Parliament, comprising 63 members, is elected through a mixed electoral system: 22 members via proportional representation in a single nationwide constituency and 41 members in single-member constituencies using the two-round system.

The upper chamber, consisting of 33 members, includes eight members appointed by the President and 25 elected by regional and city councils.

In the 2020 elections, the People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) secured a majority, occupying 47 seats. The remaining seats were distributed among other political parties, including the Agrarian Party, the Party of Economic Reforms, the Communist Party, the Socialist Party, and the Democratic Party of Tajikistan.

The upcoming elections will be closely watched as Tajikistan continues to navigate its political and social development in a dynamic regional environment.
