Trump Notifies Seven More Countries of New U.S. Tariffs Effective August 1

Washington, The Gulf Observer: Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced the imposition of new tariffs on goods imported from seven additional countries, bringing the total number of affected nations to 21. The announcement was made via Truth Social, Trump’s social media platform, where he posted official letters addressed to the leaders of the newly impacted countries.

The countries notified in the latest round include the Philippines, Brunei, Moldova, Algeria, Iraq, Libya, and Sri Lanka. According to the letters, the tariffs — set to take effect from August 1 — will vary by country:

  • 30 percent tariffs will be applied to Libya, Iraq, Algeria, and Sri Lanka
  • 25 percent tariffs on Brunei and Moldova
  • 20 percent tariffs on the Philippines

The move follows an earlier announcement on Monday, in which Trump disclosed similar tariff letters had been sent to 14 countries, with imposed rates ranging from 25 percent to 40 percent.

Trump did not provide detailed justifications for the new trade measures in the posted letters, but the action signals a potential escalation in his trade policy approach as he continues to emphasize economic nationalism and the protection of American industries.

The move is likely to provoke reactions from the affected countries and international trade observers, with possible implications for global trade dynamics ahead of the U.S. presidential election.
