Türkiye and North Macedonia Discuss Establishment of Strategic Cooperation Council

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced today that he held fruitful discussions with his North Macedonian counterpart, Timco Mucunski, regarding the establishment of a High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council to formalize and strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

Fidan underscored Türkiye’s firm commitment to enhancing ties, particularly in economic cooperation, which he emphasized should match the existing strong political relations. “Our goal is to increase the trade volume between Türkiye and North Macedonia to $2 billion,” Fidan stated, noting that both ministers had agreed on specific steps to reach this target.

The Turkish Foreign Minister also highlighted Türkiye’s close monitoring of developments in North Macedonia and expressed optimism for accelerated progress under its new government. He stressed the importance of energy and military collaboration, noting that military training and participation in joint exercises would likely expand in the near future. Fidan also pointed out that Turkish defense industry companies, which are global leaders in their field, are ready to contribute to North Macedonia’s defense sector.

Fidan emphasized his personal connection to North Macedonia, acknowledging the country’s cultural significance, particularly the Ottoman artifacts that have been restored with support from Turkish institutions. These restored works have become key tourist attractions, a development Fidan welcomed. He also reaffirmed Türkiye’s continued commitment to supporting cultural initiatives in North Macedonia.

Concluding his visit, Fidan expressed his appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by his North Macedonian counterpart and congratulated the country on its new government. “Türkiye has consistently supported North Macedonia since its independence and will continue to do so,” he said, reiterating Türkiye’s enduring partnership with the Balkan nation.

This meeting underscores the growing momentum between Türkiye and North Macedonia as both nations seek to deepen strategic, economic, and cultural ties.
