Türkiye Commemorates 50th Anniversary of Cyprus Peace Operation
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye marked the 50th anniversary of the landmark Cyprus Peace Operation on Saturday, celebrated as Peace and Freedom Day in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlighted the significance of the July 20, 1974, operation, stating it demonstrated to the world that Turkish Cypriots were not alone and underscored their “equal political status and sovereignty rights.”
“Despite efforts to completely eliminate them, today Turkish Cypriots live peacefully and securely under their own flag and the umbrella of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” Erdogan noted in the preface of a commemorative book titled 50th Anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation.
Erdogan emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the peace established in 1974 and seeking ways to coexist peacefully. He also reiterated his international appeal for the recognition of the TRNC.
“I wish to reiterate my historic call to the entire world from the UN General Assembly podium: ‘Do not turn your backs on the realities in Cyprus any longer, and recognise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as soon as possible’,” the Turkish president urged.
The commemoration events reflect Türkiye’s dedication to the TRNC and its aspirations for international acknowledgment and enduring peace on the island.
