Türkiye Demands Immediate Implementation of ICJ Order for Israel to Halt Rafah Attacks
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye has called for the immediate enforcement of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) order directing Israel to cease its attacks in Rafah, located in southern Gaza, Palestine.
“No country in the world is above the law. We expect all the decisions taken by the Court to be swiftly implemented by Israel. To achieve this, we invite the UN Security Council to do its part,” stated the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Friday, welcoming the ICJ’s directive.
The ICJ’s recent order mandates Israel to halt its military operations in Rafah, open the Rafah crossing, and permit access to international fact-finding missions.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has maintained its relentless offensive on Gaza, despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in the enclave. The ongoing conflict, lasting over seven months, has left large areas of Gaza in ruins under a severe blockade restricting food, clean water, and medicine.
The conflict has resulted in at least 35,800 Palestinian fatalities, predominantly women and children, and over 80,200 injuries. The escalation began following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.
This month, Israel intensified its assault on Rafah, causing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to flee the city, which had become a refuge for nearly half of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents. Rafah, situated on Gaza’s southern border, has been a crucial route for aid inflow, and international organizations warn that the Israeli operation has severed the enclave, escalating the risk of famine.
Türkiye’s call for the UN Security Council to enforce the ICJ’s order highlights the urgent need for international intervention to halt the violence and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
