Türkiye Elected to UN Economic and Social Council for 2026–2028 Term

New York, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye was elected on Wednesday to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the UN’s principal body for coordinating international efforts on sustainable development and economic affairs.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Türkiye’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ahmet Yildiz, expressed gratitude to the member states for their trust and support. “We look forward to working together to advance the global development agenda,” he stated.
Türkiye secured 174 votes under the Western European and Other States regional group and will serve a three-year term on the Council beginning January 1, 2026. Other elected members from the same group include Australia, Finland, and Norway.
In total, 18 countries were elected to ECOSOC during the session, representing all major regional groups: four from African states, four from Asia-Pacific states, three from Eastern European states, three from Latin American and Caribbean states, and four from the Western European and Other States group.
ECOSOC plays a vital role in shaping international economic and social policy, promoting sustainable development in its three dimensions — economic, social, and environmental — and coordinating the work of various UN specialized agencies and commissions. The Council also oversees the implementation of outcomes from major UN conferences and summits in these areas.
