Türkiye Urges Action Against UN Security Council Veto Hindering Palestine's Recognition

New York, The Gulf Observer: In a resolute stance articulated before the General Assembly on Wednesday, Türkiye voiced strong condemnation against the obstructionist use of the veto power at the UN Security Council, citing it as a barrier to Palestine’s rightful recognition among the community of nations.

Ahmet Yildiz, Türkiye’s permanent representative to the UN, underscored the imperative of upholding the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people, emphasizing that the use of veto power should not impede an immediate ceasefire nor obstruct Palestine’s path to full UN membership.

Affirming Türkiye’s steadfast support for Palestine’s application for full UN membership, Yildiz urged the international community to urgently address the Palestinian question and acknowledge the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.

Expressing concern over the impasse within the Security Council, Yildiz lamented its adverse impact on the UN’s foundational principles and its mandate to ensure international peace and security. He underscored the persistent challenge posed by the Palestine issue to peace and security in the Middle East, condemning the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the unjust assault on and displacement of Palestinians.

Yildiz advocated for the implementation of relevant Council resolutions and measures decreed by the International Court of Justice while vehemently opposing any military offensive against Rafah in southern Gaza. He reaffirmed the principle of international law as universally applicable without discrimination, warning against the destabilizing consequences of its abandonment.

Highlighting the need for international action to compel Israel to facilitate safe and unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza, Yildiz reiterated Türkiye’s unwavering support for the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) and denounced smear campaigns against it.

The Turkish envoy reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to achieving a just and lasting resolution to the conflict through a two-state solution, emphasizing the Palestinian people’s right to a future marked by dignity, freedom, and prosperity. He pledged Türkiye’s ongoing endeavors towards ending the conflict and fostering enduring peace and stability in the region.
