Türkiye Welcomes Iraq’s Decision to Ban PKK, Solidifies Bilateral Relations
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: In a significant development reinforcing cooperation between Türkiye and Iraq, Türkiye has expressed its appreciation for the Iraqi National Security Council’s decision to designate the PKK terrorist group as a banned organization within Iraq’s borders. The decision was announced following a security meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein, along with their respective delegations, held in the Iraqi capital.
The joint statement issued after the meeting marks a pivotal moment in the bilateral relations between Türkiye and Iraq, coinciding with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s proposed visit to Baghdad after the conclusion of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the success of President Erdogan’s historic visit, underscoring their shared dedication to enhancing cooperation across various sectors. Discussions encompassed a wide array of bilateral and regional issues, with a particular focus on strengthening cooperation in security, trade, energy, water, education, and other areas of mutual interest.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein emphasized the need to bolster collaboration to address regional challenges effectively. He highlighted the importance of enhancing security cooperation and combating terrorism, particularly against the PKK and its affiliates operating from Iraqi territory, which pose a threat to the security of both Türkiye and Iraq.
The joint statement also outlined plans to establish a structural framework through a memorandum of understanding to regulate relations between Türkiye and Iraq comprehensively. This framework aims to establish regular contact mechanisms and enhance cooperation in various fields.
As part of the intensified efforts to strengthen bilateral ties, Türkiye and Iraq have agreed to establish joint committees focusing on counter-terrorism, trade, agriculture, energy, water, health, and transportation. These committees will work collaboratively to advance mutual interests and deepen cooperation between the two nations.
The PKK, recognized as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union, has been engaged in armed conflict against the Turkish state since 1984, resulting in significant casualties. Türkiye has conducted cross-border operations in northern Iraq since 2019, targeting PKK militants and disrupting their activities in the region. The joint efforts between Türkiye and Iraq underscore their shared commitment to combat terrorism and promote regional stability.
