Türkiye Welcomes TRNC Parliament’s Resolution on Two-State Solution for Cyprus

Türkiye

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye has welcomed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) parliament’s approval of a resolution supporting a two-state solution to the Cyprus issue, calling it a significant step toward protecting the sovereignty and future of the Turkish Cypriot people.

“This decision is a powerful manifestation of the Turkish Cypriot people’s determination to protect their sovereignty, identity and future,” Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz said in a statement on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.

Yılmaz emphasized that the long-pursued federation model “has failed to yield results for half a century” and is now “exhausted.” He underlined that “a realistic, sustainable, and fair solution on the island is possible only on the basis of two sovereign and equal states.”

The Vice President congratulated the members of the TRNC parliament for their decisive stance “for the future, peace, and dignity of the Turkish Cypriot people,” reaffirming Türkiye’s continued support for the Turkish Cypriots’ right to determine their own destiny.

The TRNC parliament adopted the resolution by a majority vote on Tuesday, reaffirming its commitment to the two-state vision as the foundation for any future negotiations.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following a Greek Cypriot coup aimed at uniting the island with Greece, which prompted Türkiye’s military intervention as a guarantor power to protect the Turkish Cypriot community. The TRNC was subsequently established in 1983.

Despite repeated United Nations-led efforts to achieve a comprehensive settlement, including the failed 2017 talks in Switzerland involving Türkiye, Greece, and the United Kingdom as guarantor states, the island remains divided.

The Greek Cypriot Administration joined the European Union in 2004, the same year it rejected a UN-backed reunification plan supported by the Turkish Cypriots.

Türkiye maintains that lasting peace and stability in Cyprus can only be achieved through the recognition of two sovereign and equal states on the island.
