Turkmenistan Celebrates Arrival of the New Year with Grand Lighting Ceremony in Ashgabat

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Turkmenistan’s capital was illuminated with festive cheer on Sunday as officials marked the arrival of the New Year with the lighting of the Main New Year’s Tree, a cherished national tradition. The annual ceremony, held in front of the Älem Cultural and Entertainment Center, attracted thousands of residents and visitors, including families, children, performers, and cultural groups, who gathered to celebrate the country’s most anticipated holiday.

The grand 44-meter-tall New Year’s tree, adorned with garlands, crystal snowflakes, and an eight-pointed star featuring the numbers 2025, became the centerpiece of the festivities. The tree’s radiant lights symbolized the festive spirit and the hope for a prosperous new year.

A magical atmosphere filled the square as beloved characters from Turkmen fairy tales, including Aýaz Baba and Garpamyk, embarked on a festive journey from the foothills of the Kopetdag Mountains to Ashgabat. Their journey took them through iconic city landmarks, including the newly opened Arkaç shopping and entertainment center. Spectators enjoyed theatrical performances, puppet shows, and vibrant dance numbers, creating an enchanting start to the celebrations.

The highlight of the evening was the lighting of the city’s main tree, along with other New Year’s trees across the country’s regions. The celebration also featured performances by theater troupes, children’s choirs, and popular artists, culminating in a joyful concert.

As part of the festivities, young participants received gifts on behalf of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. These surprises reflected the country’s ongoing commitment to the younger generation, with new schools, recreational centers, and sports facilities being established to ensure their well-being and development.

The first day of New Year festivities concluded with a lively concert, including a children’s choir and performances by popular singers, all celebrating the joy and hope that the new year brings to the people of Turkmenistan.
