Anwar Ibrahim Appoints Thaksin Shinawatra as Informal Advisor for Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship
Putrajaya, The Gulf Observer: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced the appointment of former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra as his informal advisor to assist Malaysia during its chairmanship of ASEAN next year.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday following a meeting with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra at Perdana Putra, Anwar emphasized the value of Thaksin’s experience as a statesman in providing strategic insights.
“I have agreed to appoint Thaksin as my informal advisor on chairing ASEAN, supported by a team of members from ASEAN countries in an informal setup,” said Anwar. “We need the benefit of the experience of such statesmen, and I thank him for agreeing to this role.”
Anwar explained that Malaysia proposed the idea, which received Thailand’s full support. He also outlined plans to establish an informal advisory group composed of former ASEAN leaders, such as Thaksin, to offer expertise and ideas on ASEAN-related matters.
During the press conference, Anwar expressed his warm welcome to Paetongtarn, describing her as a close family friend. “We consider her visit a homecoming of sorts. Despite being in office for just four months, she has already achieved commendable progress, and her commitment to fostering Malaysia-Thailand relations is evident,” he said.
Anwar also extended his gratitude to Thailand for its support of Malaysia’s position on the accession of Timor-Leste as a full ASEAN member. He noted efforts were underway to ensure conditions for membership are met, with hopes for progress by May next year.
Paetongtarn, in turn, expressed her appreciation for Malaysia’s hospitality and highlighted the discussions held during her visit.
“Our focus is on strengthening economic cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, border connectivity, the digital economy, and tourism,” she said.
She also highlighted the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on Monday – covering cooperation in culture, arts, and heritage; the development of the rubber industry; and broader economic collaboration – as key milestones in enhancing bilateral ties.
“I am confident these agreements will further strengthen our economic partnership and deepen people-to-people relations,” she added.
Paetongtarn extended an invitation to Anwar for an official visit to Thailand, expressing enthusiasm for future collaborations. “You are welcome to visit Thailand anytime, whether officially or non-officially. I would be happy to act as your tour guide and show you the best of our country,” she said.
Paetongtarn concluded her two-day official visit to Malaysia on Monday evening, leaving on a positive note with strengthened ties between the two nations.
