Turkmenistan, Iraq Discuss Expanding Bilateral Cooperation as Baghdad Opens Embassy in Ashgabat

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Serdar Muhammetdurdyev held a meeting on March 9, 2026, with Jassim Mohammed Al-Attar, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Turkmenistan, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Turkmen deputy foreign minister warmly welcomed the Iraqi diplomat and expressed appreciation to the Iraqi side for its decision to open an Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Ashgabat.
Muhammetdurdyev reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s readiness to provide all necessary assistance to ensure the effective functioning of the diplomatic mission of the brotherly country.
During the talks, both sides noted that the establishment of the Iraqi Embassy in Ashgabat would contribute to further strengthening bilateral relations in the political-diplomatic, trade-economic, and cultural-humanitarian spheres.
The participants also emphasized that the development of bilateral ties has been supported by high- and top-level meetings as well as regular political consultations between the foreign ministries of Turkmenistan and Iraq, the most recent of which took place in October 2025 in Baghdad.
The meeting also explored opportunities to expand trade and economic cooperation, including strengthening partnerships between the business communities of the two countries. In addition, the sides highlighted the potential for enhancing cultural and humanitarian collaboration, particularly in the areas of science, education, sports, and tourism.
The officials noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Iraq in 2009, contacts between the two friendly nations have steadily expanded across various fields, especially on the international stage.
