Turkmenistan Participates in 88th UNECE Inland Transport Committee Meeting in Geneva

Geneva, The Gulf Observer: The 88th session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee (ITC) commenced on 17 February 2026 in Geneva, bringing together global leaders and experts to advance the future of inland transport systems.

The Inland Transport Committee, one of the United Nations’ principal platforms for shaping international transport policy, convenes heads of transport authorities from member states, senior officials of international organizations, representatives of relevant institutions, members of the transport business community, and leading experts.

Turkmenistan is participating in the high-level gathering with a delegation headed by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers B. Annayev.

Focus on Innovation and Digital Transformation

Held under the overarching theme “Advancing Innovation for the Future of Inland Transport,” the 88th session centers on automation, digitalization of infrastructure, development of international transport corridors, and harmonization of regulatory and legal frameworks.

Priority discussions include:

  • Automation of transport operations
  • Digital connectivity and infrastructure modernization
  • Expansion of international transport corridors
  • Strengthening regulatory alignment across borders
  • Enhancing resilience of global transport systems

During the High-Level Segment, ministerial panel discussions addressed the implementation of intelligent transport solutions, digital connectivity, and improved transport links to facilitate sustainable trade.

Turkmenistan Highlights Strategic Priorities

In his address, the head of the Turkmen delegation underscored that Turkmenistan considers the digital transformation of the transport sector a strategic priority of state policy. He highlighted efforts to modernize the regulatory framework governing electronic document management, introduce intergovernmental data exchange mechanisms, and develop digital transport corridors along the North-South and East-West routes.

Particular emphasis was placed on practical cooperation with UNECE in advancing multimodal transport digitalization and establishing automated data exchange systems.

The statement also reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to aligning national initiatives with the global sustainable development agenda, including the Decade of Sustainable Transport 2026–2035, proclaimed at the country’s initiative.

The 88th session of the UNECE Inland Transport Committee will continue its work in Geneva until 20 February 2026.
