Turkmenistan to propose establishing security council in Central Asia at UN

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Turkmenistan will propose the establishment of a permanent Security Council in Central Asia at the 78th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York on September 12, 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, announced at the government meeting on Friday.

According to the official Turkmen press, with the creation of the Security Council, the first meeting will be organized in Ashgabat in 2024.

Rashid Meredov also said that the international conference of the Group of Friends of Neutrality, created at the initiative of Turkmenistan within the framework of the UN, will be proposed to be held in Turkmenistan in December 2024, and the establishment of the Institute for Neutrality and Security in Ashgabat will be examined.

According to the report, the Turkmen side will submit proposals to the UN General Assembly session in New York to develop a global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 under the auspices of the UN, as a contribution to efforts within the framework of the global methane pledge, as well as the Caspian Ecological Initiative and the creation of the UN Council for Water Resources Management in Central Asia, which will be headquartered in Ashgabat.

The government meeting also touched upon other issues on the state agenda.
