Turkmenistan, UN Discuss Strategic Partnership and Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: On 8 January 2026, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov met with UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Dmitry Shlapachenko to discuss a broad range of issues related to the strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and the United Nations.
During the meeting, Minister Meredov highlighted key areas of cooperation with the UN, beginning with a detailed review of the outcomes of the previous Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2021–2025. Both sides emphasized the importance of the work of the Steering Committee in implementing the framework and discussed arrangements for the effective implementation of the new Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2026–2030.
The meeting also underlined Turkmenistan’s commitment to expanding the presence of UN specialized agencies, structural units, and programs within the country.
Additionally, the parties reviewed the progress of ongoing UN programs and project activities in Turkmenistan, noting that tens of projects and initiatives are currently being implemented under bilateral and regional agreements.
The discussion further covered the preparation and implementation of upcoming joint events, including a conference in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and training courses for young diplomats, among other initiatives.
The meeting reflects Turkmenistan’s continued dedication to deepening its strategic partnership with the United Nations and advancing sustainable development in the country.
