UAE and Chile Presidents Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Excellency Gabriel Boric Font, President of the Republic of Chile, held a significant meeting at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi to discuss the enhancement of bilateral ties between the UAE and Chile. The discussions centered on cooperation in commercial, investment, and developmental sectors, emphasizing future-focused visions and sustainable development for both nations.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan warmly welcomed President Gabriel Boric Font on his inaugural visit to the UAE since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1978. The visit underscores President Boric Font’s commitment to fostering new horizons for bilateral relations that serve mutual interests.

The leaders reviewed progress in various sectors, including economy, investment, renewable energy, digital economy, climate action, environmental solutions, and infrastructure. Their talks highlighted the shared goal of achieving sustainable economic prosperity and the importance of cooperation in these fields.

In addition to bilateral topics, the leaders exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, discussing perspectives on supporting multilateral international efforts to enhance stability, cooperation, and global development. His Highness emphasized the UAE’s comprehensive vision for cooperation with Latin American countries, focusing on development and stability as fundamental pillars for a prosperous and sustainable future.

The UAE President underscored the importance of investing in diverse opportunities, particularly in renewable energy, digital economy, sustainability solutions, and climate action. Both the UAE and Chile have led pioneering projects and share the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Chile’s partnership in the Mangrove Alliance for Climate, led by the UAE and Indonesia, further strengthens their collaboration.

A notable highlight of the meeting was the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, marking a significant milestone in UAE-Chilean economic relations. This agreement reflects the shared commitment to fostering substantial progress and building bridges of cooperation with major global economies.

His Highness highlighted the 26% increase in non-oil trade between the UAE and Chile from January to April 2024 compared to the same period last year, indicating significant progress in economic relations. Additionally, Chile’s participation with the UAE in the joint declaration for cooperation regarding the Bi-Oceanic Corridor, signed during COP28, supports bilateral trade and aims to expand regional trade.

President Gabriel Boric Font expressed his pleasure in visiting the UAE and meeting His Highness the President. He conveyed appreciation for the warm welcome and emphasized Chile’s keenness to expand cooperation and benefit from the UAE’s inspiring developmental experience. He highlighted Chile’s eagerness to invest in opportunities to build partnerships in the fields of economy, investment, and renewable energy.

The Chilean President penned a message in the guest book, expressing hope that the visit would significantly boost cooperation and contribute to shared objectives of enhanced development and prosperity.

Following the talks, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan hosted a luncheon in honor of President Gabriel Boric Font and his delegation. The talks and luncheon were attended by prominent UAE officials, including His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court; H.H. Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior; and other senior UAE ministers and officials.

The Chilean delegation included several ministers and senior officials, further underscoring the importance of this high-level meeting in strengthening UAE-Chile relations.
