UAE Pavilion at COP29 Showcases Decarbonization Efforts and Climate Innovation
Baku, The Gulf Observer: The UAE Pavilion at COP29 hosted a series of high-impact sessions, spotlighting the nation’s leadership in decarbonizing high-emission sectors and fostering a climate-neutral economy through innovation and investment in sustainability and renewable energy.
The sessions gathered prominent voices from the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the Hydrogen Council, the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations, and New York University Abu Dhabi, emphasizing global collaboration to address climate challenges.
Launch of Global Energy Efficiency Alliance
The day began with the introduction of the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA), aimed at driving global energy efficiency. Eng. Sharif Alolama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, highlighted the UAE’s development of the “UAE Consensus,” a global benchmark for energy efficiency. “Energy efficiency is not just a goal; it’s the foundation of our sustainable future,” he stated, emphasizing that every $1 invested in energy efficiency yields $2 in savings, paving the way for substantial environmental, economic, and social benefits.
Climate Action for Peace, Relief, and Recovery
In a panel on accelerating climate action, Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister for Energy & Sustainability, addressed the significance of the Loss & Damage Fund as “an unparalleled investment for development, peace, and equity.” He expressed hope for further progress leading up to COP30 in Brazil. Panelists, including Gilles Carbonnier of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Syed Husain Quadri of the Islamic Development Bank, discussed pathways to protect livelihoods in climate-vulnerable communities and improve access to climate finance in conflict-affected areas.
Empowering Youth in the Energy Transition
A fireside chat featuring Beniamin Strzelecki, Youth Climate Advisor to the UN Secretary-General, and Antonios Vouloudis of NYU Abu Dhabi, underscored the critical role of youth in advancing renewable energy. Strzelecki praised the UAE’s investment in global sustainability projects and advocated for intergenerational dialogue, emphasizing the importance of including youth voices in decision-making processes.
Economic Transition to Net-Zero
Hosted by First Abu Dhabi Bank, a session on decarbonizing high-emission sectors examined the progress, challenges, and opportunities in transitioning to Net Zero. The discussion provided insights into innovative approaches to achieving climate goals in industries such as manufacturing and energy.
Hydrogen Solutions for Hard-to-Abate Sectors
The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure concluded the day with a panel on hydrogen’s potential to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like steel, cement, and waste. Emirati and German public-private sector leaders shared innovative solutions to harness hydrogen for sustainable industrial processes.
