UAE Strengthens Global Digital Trade Leadership Through Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements

Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) continues to solidify its position as a global leader in digital trade through its Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) with countries worldwide. These agreements enable Emirati businesses to play a crucial role in shaping the future of digital commerce while leveraging cutting-edge technologies to enhance international trade efficiency.
As part of its future-ready economic strategy, the UAE has integrated artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain-based customs clearance solutions into its trade framework, ensuring faster and more secure transactions. Unlike traditional trade agreements, the UAE’s CEPAs incorporate dedicated provisions for services, particularly digital trade, reinforcing the nation’s role in setting global standards for digital commerce.
Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade, highlighted that the UAE is among the fastest-growing nations in digital trade. The country’s total digital services exports reached USD 47.91 billion in 2023, reflecting a 5% growth compared to 2022. Globally, more than 63% of service exports are now delivered digitally, covering key sectors such as fintech, insurance, consulting, and software development.
Dr. Al Zeyoudi emphasized that AI is no longer just an enabler but the foundation of next-generation trade systems, revolutionizing how goods and services move across borders. He noted that nations adopting AI-driven trade policies and digital agreements will lead the global economy over the next decade.
The UAE’s CEPAs offer Emirati businesses new opportunities for innovation, expansion, and competition on an international scale. Each agreement includes a dedicated chapter on intellectual property rights (IPRs), ensuring strong legal protection for UAE-developed technologies, brands, and creative content in partner countries.
Under these agreements, patents and trademarks are recognized faster, and Emirati businesses enjoy the same legal protections as local companies in CEPA partner nations. This allows UAE firms to license, sell, and scale their innovations with confidence, further strengthening the nation’s global digital trade influence.
