Washington, The Gulf Observer: US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources, Geoffrey Pyatt, affirmed the United States’ unwavering support for Azerbaijan’s upcoming presidency of COP29, according to media reports.
During the briefing, Pyatt highlighted the positive discussions held with Azerbaijani officials, both in Houston and Washington, emphasizing the United States’ robust endorsement of Azerbaijan’s COP29 presidency. He expressed confidence in the alignment between the goals set by President Ilham Aliyev and those championed by the United States as they approach COP29 and look forward to COP30 in Brazil in 2025.
Pyatt underscored the US’ backing of the Troika mechanism, developed by the UAE, Azerbaijan, and Brazil, to manage the agenda for COP28, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing climate challenges.
Focusing on energy issues, Pyatt emphasized efforts to green the global energy system and mitigate climate impact. He commended Azerbaijan’s adherence to the Global Methane Pledge, highlighting collaboration with energy companies such as bp, Chevron, and ExxonMobile to capture methane emissions in the Caspian region.
Azerbaijan is set to host COP29 in November, following the decision made at the COP28 plenary meeting in Dubai last December. The event is anticipated to draw approximately 70-80,000 foreign guests, positioning Baku as a pivotal hub for global climate discussions.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, established in 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The Conference of the Parties (COP) serves as the highest legislative body overseeing its implementation, with 198 countries as parties to the Convention.
