US Congress Delegation Reaffirms Recognition of Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: A visiting delegation of US Congress members on Friday reaffirmed Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and voiced support for stronger American investment in the region.
The delegation held talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita, during which Congressman Mike Lawler underlined the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the southern provinces.
Lawler reiterated that the United States remains committed to recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, describing the 2007 Moroccan autonomy plan as the most “serious and credible” framework for resolving the dispute.
He also encouraged greater American investments in the Sahara, stressing that economic development would further consolidate the historic partnership between Morocco and the United States. Recalling Morocco’s recognition of US independence in 1777, Lawler noted the enduring strength of the relationship.
Congressman Ritchie Torres praised the strategic partnership between the two countries, emphasizing that Morocco stands as the United States’ closest friend in North Africa.
