Uzbekistan and Afghanistan Discuss Measures to Protect Amu Darya Riverbanks

Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: A high-level delegation led by Minister of Water Management of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Khamraev, met with representatives from Afghanistan to discuss critical water management issues. The Uzbek delegation held negotiations with Ataullah Omari, the acting head of the Afghan Ministry of Agriculture.

The primary focus of the meeting was on enhancing cooperation to strengthen the banks of the Amu Darya River. Both countries have been experiencing significant challenges due to floods that are destroying crops and riverside homes. The discussions aimed to develop joint strategies to mitigate these adverse effects and protect the livelihoods of communities dependent on the river.

Shavkat Khamraev emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in managing shared water resources and addressing the environmental impacts affecting both nations. He stated, “Strengthening the banks of the Amu Darya River is crucial for the sustainability and prosperity of our regions. We must work together to implement effective solutions.”

Ataullah Omari expressed Afghanistan’s commitment to partnering with Uzbekistan on this vital issue, highlighting the mutual benefits of enhanced cooperation. “By joining forces, we can develop comprehensive measures to protect our agricultural lands and communities from the devastating effects of floods,” Omari said.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to continue their dialogue and cooperation on water management and environmental protection. This collaboration marks a significant step towards ensuring the resilience and stability of the Amu Darya River region.
