Uzbekistan and United States Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Critical Minerals
Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: On 16 September 2024, Omnullo Nasritdinhodjaev, First Deputy Minister of Mining and Geology of Uzbekistan, and Jonathan Henick, U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan, formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on critical minerals. This landmark agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in the exploration, development, and utilization of mineral resources, marking a key advancement in the U.S.-Uzbekistan economic partnership.
The signing of the MoU follows the high-level summit held in New York in September 2023, where the heads of state from both countries highlighted the strategic importance of initiating dialogue on mineral resources. The memorandum is one of the first significant steps taken by both nations to implement the commitments made during the summit, signaling a mutual commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation in this vital sector.
The MoU focuses on enhancing collaboration in the critical minerals industry, with the broader goal of fostering economic growth and creating new opportunities in both countries. This cooperation will extend beyond minerals, potentially opening new avenues for collaboration in related fields and industries.
The document also paves the way for further dialogue between the two countries on geological exploration, mineral extraction, and the creation of high-value-added product chains. These efforts are expected to bolster Uzbekistan’s ambitions to become a key player in the global mining industry while providing the U.S. with access to essential mineral resources critical to its industries.
Additionally, during the signing event, the Uzbek delegation confirmed its participation in MINExpo International 2024, the world’s largest mining industry exhibition, scheduled for 24-26 September 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. This event will provide a platform for Uzbekistan to showcase its mineral potential and engage with global industry leaders to further strengthen its mining sector.
This MoU represents an important milestone in the growing relationship between the United States and Uzbekistan, with both nations committed to advancing cooperation in critical minerals and beyond.
