Uzbekistan, EU to strengthen inter-parliamentary ties

Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: The Senate Chairperson Tanzila Narbaeva held talks with the EU Special Representative for Central Asia, Terhi Hakala, and the EU Special Representative for Human Rights, Eamon Gilmore.

At the meeting, the parties discussed the current state of bilateral relations and prospects for further development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union. In particular, strengthening inter-parliamentary ties, and consolidating collaboration in protecting human rights and freedoms were considered.

The guests were given detailed information about the ongoing reforms in the field of human rights, gender equality and labor relations, as well as the activities of the Oliy Majlis and the Youth Parliament in Uzbekistan.

Tanzila Narbaeva noted that Uzbekistan is interested in the consistent development of mutually beneficial partnerships with the European Union.

In turn, the representatives of the European Union highly appreciated the changes taking place in Uzbekistan in recent years in all spheres of society, efforts aimed at ensuring the consistency of reforms.

During the dialogue, it was noted that the issues of ensuring gender equality, guaranteeing women’s rights, and strengthening their position in society and family have risen to the level of state policy in Uzbekistan.

Following the meeting, the sides agreed to further enrich the bilateral dialogue, which is expanding in scope, with practical content.
