Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to ensuring the comprehensive success of the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting, calling it both a profound honour and a significant international responsibility for the country.

Speaking at a ceremony in Hanoi on Monday evening, PM Chính emphasized Vietnam’s steadfast dedication to multilateralism, regional solidarity, and global cooperation. He noted that the decision by APEC member economies to entrust Vietnam with hosting duties reflected their confidence and trust in the country’s capacity and international standing.

“Hosting APEC 2027 is a vital opportunity for Việt Nam to reaffirm its commitment to regional integration and to contribute meaningfully to a stable, open, and rules-based global trading system,” the Prime Minister stated.

As Vietnam marks nearly three decades of APEC membership, the Prime Minister described the forum as a critical platform for promoting trade liberalisation, attracting investment, transferring technology, and enhancing national competitiveness. He stressed that amid global uncertainties, no country can tackle challenges in isolation, and APEC must remain a cornerstone of economic cooperation and sustainable growth.

Highlighting the country’s economic momentum, PM Chính noted that Vietnam recorded a GDP growth of 7.1 per cent in 2024 and 7.52 per cent in the first half of 2025. The government is targeting a full-year growth rate of 8.3 to 8.5 per cent, with an ambition to maintain double-digit growth throughout the next decade to meet its development goals by 2030 and 2045.

Phú Quốc Island, located in the southern province of Kiên Giang (currently administered as part of An Giang Province), has been selected as the host location for APEC 2027. In preparation for the event, the Vietnamese Government is accelerating major infrastructure projects, including the expansion of Phú Quốc International Airport, construction of a new international convention centre, and upgrades to power, water, and transport systems.

To guide preparations, Prime Minister Chính outlined five strategic pillars: strengthening cooperation among APEC economies; promoting innovation and creativity; enhancing coordination across ministries and localities; mobilising both public and private resources; and ensuring APEC outcomes yield tangible economic and social benefits for the Vietnamese people.

He added, “We are determined to make APEC 2027 a success on all fronts,” noting that the event will not only enhance Vietnam’s international profile but also foster long-term partnerships and deliver concrete benefits to the nation’s citizens and businesses.

At the event, representatives from South Korea and China — hosts of APEC in 2025 and 2026, respectively — commended Việt Nam’s active engagement with the forum over the past 25 years. They pledged to support Việt Nam through shared experience and collaborative efforts, expressing confidence in its ability to deliver a successful APEC year.

Deputy Prime Minister Bùi Thanh Sơn, Chair of the National Committee for APEC 2027, shared an overview of the roadmap for preparations. He stated that 2025 would be dedicated to launching coordination activities, 2026 to finalising logistics, and 2027 to full-scale implementation.

The government will establish five sub-committees and a central secretariat to ensure seamless organisation of APEC events. Deputy PM Sơn also noted Vietnam’s intention to work closely with fellow host economies — South Korea, China, and Mexico (2028) — to ensure continuity, maximise efficiency, and leverage shared expertise for the successful hosting of APEC events through 2028.

As preparations gain momentum, Vietnam positions itself at the forefront of regional cooperation, determined to contribute actively to a resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking Asia-Pacific community.
