Wang Yi Calls on G20 to Strengthen Global Governance

New York, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the critical role of the Group of 20 (G20) in advancing global governance, calling on its members to embrace their responsibilities as major powers. Wang made these remarks during a meeting of G20 foreign ministers, held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
As a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Wang underscored the importance of partnership in addressing global challenges. “The G20 must act as a supporter of United Nations reform, upholding genuine multilateralism and steering clear of selective multilateralism,” Wang stated.
He also highlighted the G20’s role in shaping global economic and financial systems. Wang urged member countries to strengthen macroeconomic policy coordination and drive forward reforms in global financial architecture, ensuring that developing countries have greater representation and influence in international decision-making.
On trade governance, Wang called for the creation of a fair and non-discriminatory trade and investment environment, condemning all forms of protectionism. He stressed the need for the G20 to promote reforms that would enhance global trade governance and foster equitable opportunities for all nations.
Finally, Wang pointed to the necessity of accelerating progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, urging the G20 to take a leading role in global development reforms. He emphasized that collective action is needed to address pressing global challenges and to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future.
The G20 foreign ministers’ meeting comes at a time of increasing global uncertainty, with heightened calls for reform in international governance systems to reflect the evolving global landscape.
