Wydad Casablanca Eye Move for Free Agent Hakim Ziyech Ahead of Club World Cup

Casablanca, The Gulf Observer: Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Hakim Ziyech following his recent departure from Qatari side Al Duhail. According to Africa Foot, the 32-year-old winger is a free agent and could be set for a surprise return to Morocco with a short-term deal in the Botola Pro.
Ziyech parted ways with Al Duhail just five months into his stint in Doha. His time in Qatar proved underwhelming, with only one goal and one assist in 13 appearances. The club confirmed his exit in a brief statement on Saturday, without offering further details.
Wydad, preparing to represent Morocco at the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, are said to be keen on adding experience and attacking flair to their squad. Club president Hicham Aït Menna has reportedly initiated contact through intermediaries to assess Ziyech’s interest in the move.
Despite his prominent role with the Moroccan national team in recent years, Ziyech has never played club football in Morocco. Born and raised in the Netherlands, his professional career has included spells at Heerenveen, FC Twente, Ajax, Chelsea, Galatasaray, and most recently, Al Duhail.
Once heralded as one of Europe’s most creative midfielders during his time at Ajax, Ziyech’s career has stumbled in recent seasons. A high-profile move to Chelsea was marred by injuries and inconsistent playing time, and short spells in Turkey and Qatar have yet to reignite his form. He was notably left out of Morocco’s squad in 2025, raising questions about his future at both club and international level.
A move to Wydad could offer the former Ajax star a fresh start and the opportunity to reclaim his place in the national team ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, which Morocco is set to host. Wydad view his potential arrival as a statement signing, adding Champions League and World Cup experience to their roster ahead of a crucial campaign.
Ziyech’s market value has dipped to approximately €4.5 million, but his availability on a free transfer makes the deal financially viable. If finalized, the signing could provide both a boost to Wydad’s Club World Cup aspirations and a second wind for one of Morocco’s most gifted footballers.
