Xi Jinping Outlines Vision for China-Vietnam Community with a Shared Future in Nhân Dân Article

TGO Special Report: In a landmark article published in Nhân Dân (The People) newspaper, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and President of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Xi Jinping, emphasized the deep-rooted historical ties and forward-looking cooperation between China and Vietnam, heralding a new chapter in the bilateral relationship as the two nations celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations.
Entitled “Building on Past Achievements and Making New Advances in Pursuit of Shared Goals,” Xi’s article reflects on the revolutionary friendship that has united the two socialist neighbors for decades and sets out a comprehensive roadmap for deepening cooperation across political, economic, cultural, and multilateral dimensions.
“This will be my fourth visit to this beautiful country,” Xi wrote, referring to his upcoming state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Vietnamese leaders, including General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Comrade Tô Lâm, and President Lương Cường. “I look forward to renewing friendship with Vietnamese leaders, discussing ways of boosting cooperation, and drawing up a new blueprint for the China-Vietnam community with a shared future in the new era.”
Revolutionary Bonds and Political Trust
Xi traced the origins of the bilateral relationship to the shared revolutionary struggles against colonialism and imperialism, recalling the mutual support extended during their respective wars of national liberation. “The friendship between Vietnam and China is so profound because we are both comrades and brothers,” he noted, referencing a well-known phrase emblematic of this historic solidarity.
He highlighted the strong political mutual trust cultivated through frequent high-level exchanges and robust bilateral mechanisms, including the steering committee for cooperation, strategic dialogues on defense and public security, and legislative exchanges between the National People’s Congress of China and the National Assembly of Vietnam.
Economic Cooperation and Shared Prosperity
On the economic front, Xi praised the growing synergies between the Belt and Road Initiative and Vietnam’s “Two Corridors and One Economic Circle” strategy. He noted that China has remained Vietnam’s largest trading partner for over two decades, with bilateral trade surpassing USD 260 billion in 2024. Cooperation projects such as the Cát Linh–Hà Đông metro line, smart port developments, and clean energy initiatives have contributed to mutual development.
He encouraged further collaboration in emerging industries, including 5G, artificial intelligence, and green technologies, and reiterated China’s support for Vietnamese agricultural exports and infrastructure development.
People-to-People Exchanges
Underscoring the importance of cultural and social ties, Xi welcomed the designation of 2024 as the China–Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges. He celebrated the surge in tourism and cultural affinity, noting that over 3.7 million Chinese tourists visited Vietnam in 2024 and highlighting the popularity of each other’s cultural exports.
“We should tell stories of friendship that resonate with our two peoples, so as to pass on the baton of China-Vietnam friendship from generation to generation,” he wrote.
Regional and Global Collaboration
Xi called for strengthened coordination in regional and multilateral forums such as East Asia cooperation and the Lancang-Mekong initiative. Emphasizing a shared commitment to multilateralism, he proposed deepening cooperation under global initiatives like the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative.
He also voiced strong support for a rules-based international order and cautioned against trade wars and protectionism, reiterating the need for stable global supply chains and inclusive globalization.
Maritime Cooperation and Peaceful Dispute Resolution
Addressing maritime issues, Xi emphasized dialogue and negotiation as the path forward. He urged both sides to fully utilize existing maritime mechanisms, implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, and actively consult on a Code of Conduct.
“We should be impervious to all interference, bridge differences and expand common ground, and make the South China Sea a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation,” Xi stated.
A Shared Vision for the Future
Concluding the article, Xi expressed China’s readiness to work hand-in-hand with Vietnam to advance their socialist cause, promote regional prosperity, and contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
“Standing at this new starting point of history,” he wrote, “China is ready to work with Vietnam to build on past achievements, write a new chapter in building the China-Vietnam community with a shared future, and contribute even more to building a community with a shared future for mankind.”
The article marks a significant reaffirmation of China’s commitment to its relationship with Vietnam and sets a clear agenda for deepened bilateral cooperation in the years to come.
