1 Dead, Up to 22 Injured in Kansas City Shooting Following Chiefs Super Bowl Parade

The incident unfolded following the culmination of the Super Bowl victory parade for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves, in a press briefing, confirmed the grim toll of the incident, stating, “This is still an active investigation.” The police have recovered firearms, and three individuals are currently detained and under investigation in connection with the shooting. Chief Graves did not disclose the number of firearms recovered or their caliber.

Kansas City Fire Chief Ross Grundyson reported that eight individuals sustained “immediately life-threatening” injuries during the shooting. The tragic incident took place near Union Station.

One fatality has been identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a DJ associated with radio station KKFI 90.1. In a somber statement on Facebook, the station expressed profound sadness, describing the act as senseless and acknowledging the loss of a beloved member of the community.

President Joe Biden responded to the tragedy, urging Congress to take action on gun control measures. He called for a ban on assault weapons, limits on high-capacity magazines, and strengthened background checks. “Today’s events should move us, shock us, shame us into acting. What are we waiting for? What else do we need to see? How many more families need to be torn apart?” the President stated in a press release.

Local authorities had initially taken two armed suspects into custody for further investigation. Mayor Quinton Lucas assured the public during the briefing that all Kansas City Chiefs players, coaches, and staff members are safe and accounted for.

The National Football League (NFL) expressed condolences over the tragic incident, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the senseless shooting that occurred today near the end of the rally in Kansas City for the Chiefs. Our thoughts are with the victims and everyone affected.”
