Russian Foreign Minister Commends Turkmenistan’s Neutrality and International Role

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has praised Turkmenistan for its commitment to permanent neutrality and its respected status in international affairs, describing the country as a “wise and balanced participant” on the global stage. Lavrov made these remarks during a speech delivered at a high-level gathering held at the Yyldyz Hotel in Ashgabat.
Addressing diplomats, faculty, and students of the Institute of International Relations under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Russian Foreign Minister highlighted the enduring strength of Turkmenistan’s neutral foreign policy. He noted that the country’s principled stance contributes meaningfully to fostering constructive dialogue on regional and international challenges.
Lavrov also shared his perspective on current global geopolitical trends and emphasized the dynamic and multifaceted development of the Turkmen-Russian partnership, stating that bilateral ties continue to expand across political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian spheres.
Commending Ashgabat’s active role in promoting peace and stability, Lavrov drew attention to the fact that Turkmenistan is the only country whose neutrality has been officially and unanimously recognized three times by the United Nations General Assembly. He further applauded Turkmenistan’s contributions to international diplomacy, including its initiative to declare 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust, and its proposal to create a Zone of Peace, Trust and Cooperation in Central Asia.
According to the Russian state news agency, Lavrov stated that Turkmenistan, by virtue of its unique neutral status, holds significant potential as a platform for hosting international negotiations and mediation efforts.
Concluding his remarks, the Russian Foreign Minister expressed sincere gratitude to the Government of Turkmenistan for its swift support in facilitating the safe departure of Russian citizens from Iran, amid the ongoing volatility in the Middle East. Lavrov’s visit underscores the growing strategic dialogue and mutual respect between Ashgabat and Moscow.
