Al Buraimi Healthy City Recognized by WHO in List of Sustainable Cities

Al-Buraimi, The Gulf Observer: The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially listed Al Buraimi Healthy City in the roster of sustainable cities in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. A celebration was held today at Al Salam Grand Resort in Al-Buraimi to mark this prestigious recognition, organized by the Office of Wali of Al Buraimi and the Ministry of Health (MOH).

The auspicious event was conducted under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Hilal Ali Al-Sabti, Ministry of Health, and witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including H.E. Dr. Hamad Ahmed Al-Busaidi, Governor of Al-Buraimi, and Dr. Jean Jabbour, WHO Representative to the Sultanate of Oman. The occasion was attended by several Walis and members of the Shura Council, alongside senior officials from the Ministry.

Sheikh Dr. Faisal Saleh Al-Maskari, Deputy Wali of Buraimi, highlighted the significant milestones achieved since the official signing of Buraimi Healthy City in 2020. Emphasizing the commitment to the national targets and the realization of the “Health for All” concept, he expressed pride in the successful implementation of various phases.

Dr. Majed Rashid Al-Maqbali, Director General of Health Services in Al Buraimi Governorate, underlined Al Buraimi’s success in meeting 80 criteria aligned with international standards. Over four years, the city implemented a series of community initiatives across diverse fields, contributing to WHO’s recognition. These initiatives encompassed health-promoting schools, Aflaj interfaces development, alternative power initiatives, environmental hygiene, traditional agriculture systems enhancement, mobile food carts, driving school location development, the “Our home, Our Medic” initiative, among others.

In a symbolic gesture, Dr. Jean Jabbour, WHO Representative to the Sultanate of Oman, presented the recognition certificate to H.E. Sheikh Rashid Said Al-Kalbani, Wali of Buraimi, marking the culmination of Al Buraimi’s journey towards sustainable health and well-being.

The acknowledgment by WHO reaffirms Al Buraimi’s commitment to advancing public health, sustainability, and community initiatives, contributing to the broader vision of creating healthier and more resilient cities.
