The decision followed a proposal by the Iranian Judiciary Chief, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, seeking leniency for a number of inmates. Sadeq Rahimi, the deputy head of the Judiciary, provided further details, stating that out of the 2,887 individuals eligible for pardon and sentence commutation, 2,745 are convicts from public and revolutionary courts, 11 from the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces, and 131 from the Discretionary Punishments Organization of Iran.
Rahimi also highlighted that the list of pardoned individuals includes 140 women, 40 foreign nationals, 39 individuals convicted on security charges, and 6 inmates under the age of 18.
Under Article 110 (11) of the Iranian Constitution, the Supreme Leader is authorized to grant pardons or commute sentences for prisoners based on recommendations made by the Judiciary Chief.
