China Urges Israel to Cease Discrediting Two-State Solution at UN General Assembly
New York, The Gulf Observer: China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, delivered a strong message on Tuesday, urging Israel to halt its discrediting of the “two-state solution” during his address to the UN General Assembly. Expressing deep concern over the ongoing Gaza conflict, Geng emphasized the critical need for an immediate ceasefire and an end to Israel’s illegal settlement activities.
“We urge Israel to cease discrediting the two-state solution, stop eroding its basis, and end its illegal settlement activities,” stated Geng Shuang, highlighting China’s commitment to promoting a resolution to the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Geng expressed disappointment in the Security Council’s failure to reach a consensus on a ceasefire in Gaza, attributing the repeated blocks by the United States as a cause for widespread discontent in the international community. He stressed that the majority of council members are in agreement on the need for an immediate ceasefire.
“The United States has been the only country to abuse its veto power to stifle the consensus of the Council, causing widespread discontent in the international community,” Geng remarked.
Underlining the urgency of the situation, Geng reiterated that an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is crucial for the safety of civilians, the provision of humanitarian assistance, and preventing further escalation of the conflict. He called on Israel to change its course, cease military attacks on Gaza, and stop the forced transfer and collective punishment of the Palestinian population.
Expressing concern for the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, Geng urged Israel to comply with its international obligations to ensure the safe and unimpeded entry of humanitarian supplies. He emphasized the importance of implementing Security Council Resolutions 2712 and 2720.
Geng highlighted the “two-state solution” as the only viable way to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli issue. He voiced alarm at recent rejections of this solution by some Israeli political figures and called for intensified international and regional diplomatic efforts to revitalize the political prospects for the two-state solution.
In conclusion, Geng assured that China would continue to work tirelessly with the international community to bring an early end to the fighting in Gaza, alleviate the humanitarian disaster, implement the two-state solution, and achieve enduring peace and stability in the Middle East. He also expressed China’s support for Palestine in becoming a full member state of the United Nations at an earlier date.
