Chinese Envoy Calls for Restraint and Peace in Middle East

New York, The Gulf Observer: During a plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly on Monday, Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, called on all parties involved in the Middle East conflict to exercise restraint and avoid inflammatory remarks and provocative actions to prevent further escalation of tensions in the region.

Fu emphasized the urgency of maintaining peace, stating, “At present, there must not be any delay in maintaining peace in the Middle East.” He described the situation in Gaza as increasingly dire, referring to the ongoing conflict as “the biggest wound to human conscience.” He expressed concern over rising civilian casualties and warned that a full-scale war could erupt in the region.

The envoy reiterated China’s commitment to respecting the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of all nations while opposing acts that violate international norms. He condemned all violent attacks against civilians and stressed that “might must not take the place of justice.” Fu asserted that the aspirations of the Palestinian people for an independent state must be acknowledged, and historical injustices should not be overlooked.

Fu called for a comprehensive ceasefire, highlighting that the fundamental resolution to the conflict lies in a two-state solution.

Addressing the ongoing Ukraine crisis, he noted the lack of a clear resolution and urged all parties to prioritize peace and engage in meaningful dialogue to find a political solution. Fu stressed the importance of avoiding an expansion of the battlefield and any actions that could escalate the conflict.

In addition, he highlighted the launch of the group of Friends for Peace, initiated by China, Brazil, and other Global South nations, which aims to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and build consensus for political resolutions to conflicts.

Fu also underscored the need for reasonable reform of the UN Security Council to enhance the representation and voices of developing countries, particularly those in Africa. He cautioned against allowing the Council to become dominated by wealthier nations and geopolitical rivalries, urging for more inclusivity in decision-making processes.
