Cuba Declares State Mourning for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong of Vietnam

Havana, The Gulf Observer: Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel announced a period of state mourning in honor of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, who passed away on July 19. The declaration, communicated through Granma, the official daily of the Communist Party of Cuba, outlines the mourning period and expresses profound sorrow over the loss of a respected leader.

According to the communique, Cuba will observe official mourning from 6 am on July 20 to midnight on July 21 (local time), with a state mourning extended throughout July 22. During this solemn period, flags at all public buildings and military offices will be flown at half-mast.

President Díaz-Canel conveyed heartfelt condolences, describing General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong as a beloved comrade and sincere friend of Cuba. The Cuban National Assembly also paid tribute on July 19 with a minute of silence in honor of the late Party General Secretary.

Cuban media highlighted General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s pivotal role in strengthening the fraternal and special relations between Cuba and Vietnam, fostering mutual trust between their respective Parties, National Assemblies, Governments, and peoples. General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong had undertaken official visits to Cuba in 2012 and 2018, further cementing the close ties between the two nations.
