Deadly Floods Ravage Southern Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul State

Brasília, The Gulf Observer: Tragic reports from the state’s civil defense agency reveal a devastating toll from floods in southern Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state, with the death toll standing at 175 individuals. Additionally, over 800 people have sustained injuries, while 38 individuals remain unaccounted for, as confirmed by the agency.

Since April 29, relentless floods, triggered by unprecedented rainfall, have wreaked havoc, affecting over 2.3 million residents, approximately 20 percent of the state’s population. A staggering 423,400 individuals have been displaced, with over 18,800 still seeking refuge in temporary shelters.

Furthermore, the widespread impact of this catastrophic event persists, with more than two-thirds of the state’s nearly 500 cities still grappling with the aftermath, as reported by the civil defense agency.

Amidst this dire situation, the civil defense agency issues a sobering warning of imminent danger, forecasting heavy rainfall to strike the state once again from June 14 to 17. The looming threat of further deluges exacerbates the already severe challenges faced by residents and authorities in Rio Grande do Sul.

As the region contends with the staggering human toll and extensive damage inflicted by the floods, efforts intensify to provide aid, support, and relief to those affected, while preparations are underway to mitigate the potential impact of the impending rainfall.
