Ellia Green Returns to Rugby as a Man in Sydney Club Competition

Ellia Green

Sydney, The Gulf Observer: Olympic gold medallist Ellia Green has returned to rugby union, this time competing as a man in a men’s club competition in Sydney after retiring from professional sport in 2022.

Green, 32, was a key member of Australia’s women’s Rugby Sevens team that won gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, famously scoring in the final against New Zealand. He retired in 2021 after being left out of the Tokyo Games squad, finishing as Australia’s top try and points scorer in Sevens history at the time.

After briefly switching to rugby league with the Warriors in the NRLW, Green stepped away from the sport and publicly came out as transgender in 2022 — becoming the first known Olympian to transition.

Now, Green is back on the field, playing in Sydney’s community rugby scene as he embraces a new chapter in both life and sport.
