Erdogan and Ethiopian PM Discuss Bilateral Ties and Regional Tensions
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone conversation with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, focusing on the enhancement of bilateral relations, regional tensions, and pressing global developments.
According to a statement released by Türkiye’s Communications Directorate on X, the leaders praised the growing strength of ties between Türkiye and Ethiopia, highlighting key areas of cooperation. President Erdogan emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to mediate tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia.
Erdogan pointed out the significance of Ethiopia taking decisive steps to address Somalia’s concerns regarding its unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, noting that such measures would significantly aid the mediation process.
The initial round of direct talks between the foreign ministers of Ethiopia and Somalia, held in Ankara in early July, yielded a commitment to continue dialogue, with the second round of discussions scheduled for September 2.
Beyond regional issues, President Erdogan condemned Israel’s continued military actions against Palestine, particularly in Gaza, and characterized Tel Aviv’s actions as genocide in the besieged enclave. He underscored the importance of Ethiopia’s support for the Palestinian cause, emphasizing that Ethiopia’s stance would strengthen the international community’s efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region.
The conversation between the two leaders reflects Türkiye’s active engagement in regional diplomacy and its commitment to fostering peace and cooperation on a global scale.
